Streaming Playlists Don't Work

07/17/2024

Playlists are created by music fans, not music programmers. No research was employed to ensure the suitability or recognizability of the songs.  A playlist simply isn't designed to be played day after day for customers and employees. If played from start to finish, they're always in the same order. If shuffle played, they deliver random off-balance "train wrecks" of intensity, mood and tempo. They're often created and forgotten, there are no surprises in a static playlist.  Creating your own playlist is a lot of work, if you've ever built one for a dinner party or a birthday then you know.  Now create 7 playlists,  each of them 14 hours long. The more songs you add, the less familiar your playlist becomes. Playlists controlled by AI are the same, they start with a non-researched list of music and through the skips and thumbs ups from your employees they adapt to their taste.  Which would be fine, except your employees aren't your customers.  And the music keeps getting weirder because the employees keep skipping the hits when AI plays them at the same time every day.  Takeaway: Streaming platforms are great for private personal enjoyment, but creating a thoughtful, customer focused audio strategy requires resources and time.
